Important principles when starting something new

God is always up to something new, Isaiah 43:19 Reads: “Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” This new opportunity does not only present itself at the beginning of a new year.  However, there is something refreshing and promising when venturing into something new at the beginning of a New Year, it is almost as if the New Year brings along a fresh hope and greater expectation. It is as if we have the opportunity to put behind the past and start anew.  The month of September is not only the start of a new season, but for me it is a start of a new year – it is my birth month.  So, as we all step into a new season – may this season and new month – October, bring a revived hope and an earnest expectation in all areas of your life.

The Word of God also tells us in Lamentations 3: 22 – 24 that because of the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed because of His great compassion and this fact in verse 22 is backed up with His promise in verse 23 – that His mercies are new every morning.  God is faithful – you just need to confess that the Lord is your portion and that you hope in Him! When you hope in Him – only he can make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert!  When you hope in Him – only He can bring hope to what seemed like a hopeless situation.  In fact – as I write – the early morning sun is shining brightly and directly on me – and the holy spirit is telling me that what seemed dark just a few hours ago, God overruled darkness and shined His perfect light and made all things new! We all have the expectation that when the sun sets, the sun will rise in the morning. What I am saying, perhaps you are in the midnight darkness in your life, perhaps it is your finances, your marriage, your career, a bad relationship, children, or whatever – may you have the hope and the earnest expectation that the sun will shine again.  May you receive His perfect love and light in your life right now – I declare that life and light in every lifeless and dark situation in your life right now! In Jesus Name.

As you read the Holy Spirit is releasing light and love – may you receive the light and the love of the Lord Jesus Christ – because no hatred, no rebellion, no injustice or a hardened heart can withstand His love and no darkness can withstand His light!

The Bible tells us that many are the plans of man, but only the plans of God prevail.  Perhaps with each year, month or day you have pursued your plans, but atlas this year, this month, this day this season, you have yielded and taken the lead in pursuing the plans of God – then this read is for you.

As I was reading the book of Ecclesiastes (Ecc) during the last days of 2016, I realised how God was downloading a number of simple yet powerful truths to uphold as we pursue the plans God has for us.  Whether, these plans include starting a business, starting a walking club, starting a new exercise or diet plan, or starting a blog J, then the following pointers are important for you to heed to:

  1. Do not broadcast your plans

 Ecc 5: 2-3:

“Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.  For God is in heaven and you on earth; therefore let your words be few.

For a dream comes through much activity, and a fool’s voice is known by his many words.”

If God has given you a dream or a vision, do not speak of it prematurely less it be aborted.  In Proverbs 25:2 the Bible says “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

I have come across a number of great visionaries, but made the one mistake of speaking about their plans prematurely and sadly the world never got to witness their dreams come to pass.  The other risk of speaking of your plans prematurely is that, as the Bible describes we will be known as a ‘fool’- in other words: possible business partners, investors etc… could lose trust in you and refer to you as a ‘dreamer/talker.’

I really do believe that there are great dreams and visions God has planted in you – but conceal the matter as you quietly search out the matter until such time that God says “Now is the time.”

  1. Fear God

Ecc 5: 7

“For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.”

I love this short but loaded scripture.  It is so easy for us to get lost in the ideals and illusions of our business, ministry, project etc… that we loss focus of The Dream Planter, The One that gives vision.  We can become so consumed with ‘self’ and become vain, to the point that we lose reverence to the One that was before anything else was.

If of all the pointers that I am sharing you omit, please do not forget this one – Fear God.  It is in fearing God that the beginning of wisdom and understanding comes (read Psalms 110 and Proverbs 1).  It is in fearing God that the secret intrigued detail of a matter is revealed unto you, unto you the king who searches out a matter (Proverbs 25:2). It is in fearing God that you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and man (Proverbs 3:4).

May you never lose the fear of God over your lives.  May you continually acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your paths (Proverbs 3:6).

  1. Whatever you do – must be something that brings you JOY and it should produce good fruits of which you too can enjoy!

Ecc 5: 18 – 19

“Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage.

As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given Him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labour – this is the Gift of God.

For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart.”

The real Gift of your Ministry, Business, Blog etc… whatever it is that you are starting is not necessarily the wisdom God gives you to start it with, but the ability God gives you to rejoice in your labour!  This is so profound and a very important key when starting something.  When something gives you pleasure, it means you have passion for it, which means you have grace for that particular area you are operating in – if you started a business and enjoy innovation and networking, meaning it is something that comes natural to you and does not tire you; or if you have started a blog and love writing and sharing with people – this comes natural with no effort – this is a Gift of God.  The Bible says your gift will make room for your living (Proverbs 18:16). Whatever you have started, not only should it bring joy to your heart (Ecc 5: 20); but you will be able to eat and enjoy the fruits of your labour (Ecc 5: 18).

  1. Preserve your Name

Ecc 7:1

“A good name is better than precious ointment, And the day of death than the day of one’s birth.”

For the purposes of narrowing the scope of an explanation, let me use the example of starting a business.

It is so easy to be tempted and lured into unethical business dealings.  Jesus was tempted in the desert by Satan while He was on His 40 day fast.  Satan proposed to Jesus that He could have all that His eyes could lay hold of, if only He bows down and worships him (Satan) (Matthew 4:9). It will be by no surprise, if the enemy tempts you to quick fame and riches – be careful of this – remember – Fear God!

Your name is of utmost importance.  There is a phrase that says “Your name precedes you.”  This means that before someone has officially met you, they have most probably heard of you.  What they have heard could have been bad or good.  I always say that I wish for people to say about me that I was an honest person, that whenever I could not do something – I would say so. If I could not commit to something – I would say so, in other words – that I was honest in all my dealings.

The second part of Ecc 7:1 (And the day of death than the day of one’s birth) encourages me that we should not take it to heart when we fail or when something did not go right, example:  We did not get that business contract; or we did not get that position we prayed and trusted for – whatever it is that did not go according to how we anticipated it – there are valuable lessons we learn during these curves and bumps on the road of life. You might not have gotten the contract, but atleast you have not lost your name, as a matter of fact you might have gotten more credentials added to your name!

  1. Be prepared to be spoken about

Ecc 7:21

“Also do not take to heart everything people say, Lest you hear your servant cursing you.”

I am reminded of what the Bishop TD Jakes said during a conference I attended – he narrated that whenever you pass by a crane, you should know that a big construction is taking place.  A crane will not be used for building a chicken coop. And many of us can relate to this.  When I am on a hill top and am able to overlook the city and see a crane – I always wonder what is being constructed, and I never really know once it’s done.  A crane gets attention – and gets people wondering and talking about what is being built.  There is a saying – the tallest tree catches the most wind.

If it is one thing we must accept – is that we cannot pursue the plans of God for our lives and not demand attention from others.  People will have something to say – but Ecc 7 encourages us not to take to heart everything people say. When we give heart to what people say, we stand the chance of losing focus on what God has called us to do, which only we can fulfill – and the enemy will put a strategy in place to let us lose focus and ultimately passion for the assignment on our lives.

I would like to narrate the saying many of us have quoted before “stay in your lane.” My baby daughter recently participated in her first swimming gala  – she only learned to swim this year, so I was a bit nervous to see her do a 50m backstroke in a pool that was between 1.5m and 3m deep – and as she swam, I walked alongside her cheering her on, a bit nervous aswell, okay a lot nervous! At some intervals I was ready to jump in and help her, because I thought she was sinking, and when I saw that she was getting tired and losing strength  – I shouted – “ Zenith, its fine – just turn around and swim.” But she continued in her lane, and when she got to the end I was so proud of her and so was she.  However, by the time she got to the end – the other swimmers were long done, so she was the only one at the finishing end, so she thought she was first and the only one who made it.  She kept asking me – “Mummy was I first? Did the others not make it?” And I said to her – that does not matter Zenith – you made it and I am so proud of you!  But, she kept asking.  And this scene kept on replaying in my mind – I kept on thinking of Zenith swimming and her looking as if she was sinking and her perseverance in finishing and her thinking that she was the only one who made it to the end because when she reached the end – she only saw herself – no other competitor!  And the saying – “stay in your lane”, become real to me: When you are in your lane – focused and committed to your assignment, to the point that you are not concerned of those in front or behind you or to the left or right of you; by the time you have completed your assignment, you view yourself as a winner – because you were your best competitor – you were competing against yourself and have overcome!

I am so excited to see the new thing come to pass in your life – I am so excited to see you start the assignment God has been talking to you about for a while now.  But I am most excited about you enjoying your gift!
